Pence approaches SJ-O scoring record after 27-point performance

Senior Ty Pence shot past the 2,000-point mark for his St. Joseph-Ogden career on Friday (Jan. 20) and a day later pulled to within 81 points of breaking the school’s career scoring record.

Pence put up 27 points in the 70-46 Friday win at Chillicothe IVC and posted 31 points on Saturday (Jan. 21) at home in a 61-38 victory over Effingham St. Anthony.

The weekend totals lifted his career mark to 2,035 points. The SJ-O career scoring leader is 2017 graduate Brandon Trimble (2,115 points).

Tanner Jacob drilled four three-point shots at IVC and ended with 16 points. Coy Taylor tallied eight points. Both McGwire Atwood and Logan Smith recorded seven points.

Smith distributed a season-high nine assists. He also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Taylor captured six boards while Atwood and Pence each cleared five rebounds.

The Spartans scored the game’s first 10 points.

Against St. Anthony, Smith notched 12 points. Jacob and Taylor totaled six points.

Tanner Siems grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Pence and Smith each handled six rebounds. Atwood had five rebounds.

SJ-O (16-4) is ranked eighth in the state in Class 2A and will return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 24) at Champaign’s St. Thomas More.
