Sperry and Wells finish third at Vermilion County girls’ track and field meet

Sophomores Quinn Sperry and Alyssa Wells registered third-place finishes for Oakwood on Thursday (April 6) in the Vermilion County girls’ track and field meet at Hoopeston Area.
Sperry was a double-placer, taking third in both the shot put (27 feet, 7 inches) and the discus (personal-best 85 feet, 3 inches).
Wells raced to a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (58.49 seconds).
In the team chase, the Comets took fifth in the six-school event with 33 points. Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin totaled 161 points and runner-up Westville had 114 points.
Oakwood’s other individual placer was Taylor Smoot (sixth in the 400 meters with a personal best 1:16.13).
Three of the Comets’ relays ended among the top four, including both the 400- and 800-meter foursomes, which included the same runners.
The 800-meter relay wound up in third and the 400-meter relay crossed in fourth place. The runners were Smoot, Luci Morris, Taylor Jett and Aubri Elliott. The 400 relay clocked in at 58.41 seconds. The 800 relay was timed in 2:05.75.
Oakwood’s 1,600-meter relay grouping of Smoot, Cassie Fugate, Wells and Elliott placed fourth in 5:21.34.
Also recording lifetime-best marks were Jett (ninth in the 200 meters in 31.13 seconds) and Mady Nicoson (10th in the discus at 61 feet, 2 inches).
The Comets will return to action on Tuesday (April 11) in the Salt Fork Invitational.
