Cafarelli ties for 3rd at Regional tournament

Senior Ashten Cafarelli, from St. Joseph-Ogden, tied for third place individually on Wednesday (Sept. 27) in the 11-school Tuscola Class 1A boys’ golf regional tournament at Tuscola’s Ironhorse Golf Course.
Cafarelli’s season-best 73 was two shots behind the meet medalist. His round helped SJ-O to capture one of the three team berths for the Kankakee Sectional to be held on Monday (Oct. 2).
The Spartans’ other regional scores included Ty Buss (tied for 14th with a 90) and Devan Swisher (tied for 20th with a 93).
Buss bounced back from a 90 on the front nine with a 40 to match his best 18-hole score of the season. Swisher also matched his top score of the year and Ames had his best round. Cafarelli has posted the team’s best score in all 13 meets in which he has played.
The other SJ-O regional participants all shot 95s and tied for 27th. They were Trevor Ames, Talan Miller and Asher Pruemer.
Team honors at regional were captured by St. Thomas More (309). SJ-O (351) and Marshall (363) garnered the other team berths for the sectional, to be held at the Kankakee Elks.
On Monday (Sept. 25), Cafarelli posted what was then his season-best 76 in the Sam Wells Boys’ Golf Invitational at Urbana Country Club. He finished in second place.
Senior teammate Buss also carded his best round of the season (90).
Other SJ-O leaders were Swisher (94), Miller (97) and Pruemer (99).
The Spartans tied with Pontiac for third in the five-school meet with a composite score of 357.
St. Thomas More (327) captured team honors in the Sam Wells Invitational.
