Russell wins Vermilion Valley Conference Meet

Junior Thomas Wells was the third-place finisher for the all-underclassmen Oakwood/Salt Fork boys’ cross-country team on Tuesday (Oct. 10), helping the Comets win the Vermilion Valley Conference Meet at Chrisman.
Wells was timed in 18 minutes and 17 seconds on the 3-mile loop.
Two other teammates placed among the top 15 in a race with 35 competitors.
Junior Logan Henthorn was 13th in 20:22 and sophomore Ben Darling ended 15th in 21:05.
Other team leaders were sophomore Alex Wells (18th in 21:12) and junior Connor Smith (22nd in 21:27).
Nine schools had entries, but just four fielded full teams.
Oakwood/Salt Fork edged Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin for team supremacy, 44-48. Iroquois West (50 points) was third and Chrisman/Georgetown-Ridge Farm was fourth (68 points).

In the 22-runner girls’ conference race, Oakwood/Salt Fork senior Macie Russell led a 1-2 finish for the Comets.
Russell toured the 3-mile course in 19:45. Freshman Callie Richardson was the meet runner-up, clocking a 20:48.
The Comets’ other placers were sophomore Zoe Moudy (15th in 26:49), sophomore Macie Kinney (19th in 30:33) and freshman Miley Pierce (20th in 31:19).
Just two schools fielded full teams.
Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin won top honors with 25 points. Runner-up Oakwood/Salt Fork scored 33 points.
The Comets will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 21) in the 19-school Chrisman Class 1A Regional.
