Oakwood boys’ and girls’ basketball, SJO and Heritage/VG girls’ basketball pick up wins

In its final tune-up before the start of tonight’s Toyota of Danville Classic, St. Joseph-Ogden’s boys’ basketball team dropped a 56-43 decision on Tuesday at unbeaten Cissna Park.

Chance Izard and Joel Orcutt led the Spartans (2-4) with 10 points apiece. Jack Cook scored nine points.

Payton Cain grabbed a team-high four rebounds.

Cissna Park (4-0) led 19-12 after one quarter.

The Toyota of Danville Classic (formerly The Leader Classic) will be  played in SJ-O’s gym.

SJ-O and Cissna Park will have a rematch in the final tournament game at 8 p.m. on Dec. 21.

First-round games are tonight, but the Spartans’ tourney-opener will be at 7 p.m. on Friday against Chicago Longwood.

Oakwood

The Comets (4-1) went on the road and overpowered Westville, 49-19, on Tuesday.

Zane Priest scored 18 points and Bryce Jones had 14.

Oakwood held Westville (0-5) to three second-half baskets.

The Comets return to action tonight in the Toyota of Danville Classic at SJ-O, facing Schlarman Academy at 7:30 p.m. In the 6 p.m. game, Cissna Park plays Armstrong-Potomac.

Villa Grove/Heritage

Visiting Tuscola (5-0) rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final quarter to edge Villa Grove/Heritage, 52-48, on Tuesday.

VG/H was led by Jared Stevens with 18 points and Jake Eversole with 12 points.

VG/H (7-2) led 40-32 after three quarters.

VG/H returns to action on Friday at Arthur Okaw Christian (4-1).

Girls’ basketball

Three Spartans scored in double figures on Monday as SJ-O (10-1) dispatched Paxton-Buckley-Loda 65-31 in the Panthers’ gym.

Bree Trimble led the way with a season-high 21 points. Hannah Dukeman scored 16 points and Peyton Crowe added 13.

Trimble hit 18 of her points in the first half.

SJ-O led, 19-7, after one quarter.

The Spartans, who hit 10 of 13 free throws, return to action on Monday at St. Thomas More.

Oakwood

The Comets (9-3) overcame a two-point first quarter to post a 36-28 win on Monday on the road against Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin.

B-H/R-A is 9-2.

Katelyn Young, who had the only Oakwood points in the opening frame, led the Comets with 15 points.

Kylie Neuman added 13 points.

The Comets led,12-10, at halftime, but the teams were tied 20-20 entering the fourth quarter.

Neuman and Young each netted six fourth-quarter points.

Oakwood returns to action tonight at Salt Fork.

Villa Grove/Heritage

Kyleigh Block sparked Villa Grove/Heritage’s sixth consecutive win, Tuesday’s 47-39 triumph over Unity in Tolono.

Block had eight first-quarter points as VG/H improved to 2-0 this season against the Rockets (6-5).

VG/H (9-2) hit 10 of 14 free throws, including 5 of 6 in the last stanza.

Samantha Campbell scored 13 points as the Blue Devils built a 10-point lead (14-4) after one quarter.

VG/H will play host to Cerro Gordo/Bement tonight.

Wrestling

Four St. Joseph-Ogden wrestlers won twice on Tuesday, but the Spartans (2-5) dropped two dual meet decisions at Gibson City.

Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher edged SJ-O, 45-35. Heyworth handed the Spartans a 54-20 setback.

A.J. Wagner (106 pounds), Brodie Sullivan (170 pounds), Max Shonkwiler (182 pounds) and Cole Zaccarelli (220 pounds) were 2-0 for the night.

Zaccarelli had two pins. Wagner had a pin and a technical fall.

Other SJ-O winners against GCMS/Fisher were Peyton Holt (145 pounds) by technical fall and Trevon Carr (160 pounds) by pin.
