Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) have announced Illinois’ participation in the IRS Direct File service, set to commence on January 27, 2025. This initiative will enable nearly two million eligible Illinois taxpayers to prepare and electronically file their 2024 federal tax returns at no cost.
Direct File also provides a seamless link to MyTax Illinois, the state’s free tax filing platform, allowing users to effortlessly file their Illinois state returns following their federal submissions.
“As we approach tax season, it is crucial that Illinoisans and their families have the resources needed to file their 2024 federal tax returns,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “With our state’s participation in the new Direct File program, approximately two million people will be eligible for free, electronic tax filing in 2025. This critical resource will no doubt put money typically spent on tax preparation services back into the pockets of hardworking families across Illinois.”
Originally a trial initiative in 2024, Direct File has proven successful and is now a permanent feature with 25 states participating. The IRS predicts that over 30 million taxpayers will benefit from Direct File this upcoming tax season.
