Oakwood baseball picks up two wins at Hoopeston, Softball beats Armstrong-Potomac

In a two-game baseball sweep on Saturday at Hoopeston, the Comets pounded 14 of 30 total hits for extra bases.
In the first game, Oakwood topped Cissna Park 6-1. In the second game, the Comets blasted the host Cornjerkers, 15-6, in a Vermilion Valley Conference game.
Isaiah Ruch had two hits and three runs batted in for each game. Three of his hits were for extra bases, including a first-game home run.
Brady Howard and Elijah Harden were each 4-for-5 against Hoopeston and totaled five hits for the day. Harden had three doubles and three RBI in the nightcap.
Josh Young was 2-for-4 in each game, with two doubles.
Andy Hohn had two hits in the opener and pitched a complete-game six-hitter. Hohn walked two and struck out five, yielding one earned run.
Cayden Wells had two hits in the second game.
Isaiah Ruch and Jacob Spear shared the pitching duties. Reliever Spear allowed no runs in his 3 2/3-inning stint. He walked one and struck out one. Spear also delivered two hits in the nightcap.
The Comets were limited to three hits – singles by Noah Ruch, Isaiah Ruch and Wells in Friday’s 5-3 loss at home to Armstrong-Potomac.
Howard scored two of Oakwood’s runs.
Young suffered the loss. He worked five innings, walking two and striking out eight.
Oakwood (14-10) returns to actio today at Bismarck-Henning.
Softball
Aubrey Wells, Paiton Frerichs and Kylie Neuman all socked two hits on Friday as the Comets posted an 11-1 Vermilion Valley Conference win at Armstrong-Potomac.
Frerichs and Neuman blasted triples and Wells had a double. Frerichs drove in three runs and Neuman scored twice.
Ashlynn Pinnick also crossed home plate two times. Savannah Nevitt had two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Kerrigan Shaffer pitched a six-inning complete game. She surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out eight.
The Comets (11-12) return to action today at Bismarck-Henning.
Boys’ track and field
Cameron Taylor won the 400-meet race for Oakwood in Friday’s Vermilion County Meet at Hoopeston.
His time was 53.55 seconds.
In the 800 meters, Cameron Helka placed third in 2:06.38.
The other top-three performance for the Comets came in the 1,600-meter relay. Oakwood was third in 3:53.38.
The Comets placed sixth in the seven-team meet with 34 points. Meet champion Salt Fork totaled 187 points.
Girl’ track and field
Oakwood had two individual titlists in Friday’s Vermilion County Meet at Hoopeston.
Grace Davis was victorious in the 1,600 meters by more than 30 seconds. Her winning time was 5:51.31.
In the shot put, Katelyn Young prevailed by 2 ½ feet. Her winning toss was 40-4.
Oakwood’s 800-meter relay ran second in 2:01.66.
In the team competition, Oakwood was sixth with 41 points. Meet champion Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin accumulated 138 points.
The Comets return to action on Friday in the SJ-O Class 1A Sectional. Field events start at 4 p.m. and running events are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
