Hawks go into IHSA tournament play with school-record 27 wins

The Hawks capped their record-setting regular season with back-to-back road wins to start the week.

On Monday, Heritage rallied to beat Judah Christian in Champaign, 13-25, 25-15, 25-7.

Bree Buck pounded 11 kills and had two blocks.

Torie Rothermel ended with seven kills to go with three blocks. Bri Struck had five kills and Kiley Knoll contributed four kills.

Malani Smithenry led the Hawks with eight digs and five service aces.

Knoll, Struck, Anna Sanders and Olivia Sorensen all totaled six digs.

Sorensen delivered 28 assists.

On Tuesday, Heritage swept past Villa Grove 25-14, 25-18.

Struck notched 11 kills and added three digs and two aces.

Sorensen had a solid all-around performance, registering 19 assists, five kills, four digs and two aces.

Buck swatted four kills and Smithenry ended with three.

Sanders totaled eight digs and Knoll finished with five. Buck contributed three blocks and three aces.

Heritage finished with an 8-3 record in Lincoln Prairie Conference matches.

The Hawks (27-5) return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 30 in the semifinals of the Cerro Gordo/Bement Class 1A regional against an opponent to be determined. Heritage has already established a school record for most wins in a single season.

Villa Grove Volleyball

The Blue Devils pounded Fisher 25-15, 25-14 on Monday. Reagan Cheely posted five kills, five assists and three aces while teammate Madison Burwell chipped in with four kills and three aces.

The VG loss to Heritage, 25-14, 25-18, left the Blue Devils with an 11-12 season record.

The team’s postseason opener will be on Monday in the Kansas Class 1A Regional with a first-round match against Arcola.
