Four of the team’s top five runners recorded season-best times on Saturday in the Chrisman Cowchip Classic.
The time drops were not expected by coach Jim Kestner.
“Times typically aren’t as fast, as this course is a LOT tougher than most we face during the year,” Kestner said. “The fact that over half of our runners bettered last week’s times shows they’ve dug in and taken a big step.”
The team leader was freshman Lilli Montgomery, whose 3-mile time was 22 minutes and 42 seconds. She finished in 29th place overall.
Following her were teammates Madison Logan (73rd in 25:59), Hailey Stutz (77th in 26:09), Kyleigh Price (82nd in 26:42) and Emma Buesing (90th in 27:10).
Logan, Stutz, Price and Buesing – all of whom are underclassmen – each posted season-best times. Logan and Price both cut at least 80 seconds off their previous best.
As a team, VG/Heritage placed 12th among the 15 schools that fielded full teams.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday (Sept. 12) at Paxton-Buckley-Loda.
