The Heritage High School girls’ basketball team had one representative on the Lincoln Prairie Conference all-league teams.

Freshman Brooklynn Powell was chosen to the five-player honorable mention list.

Powell led the Hawks in scoring with a 7.1 average and had a high game of 19 points in a 10-point win over Decatur Eisenhower in December.

The Heritage boys’ basketball season came to an end on Monday (Feb. 19) in an IHSA regional quarterfinal game against state-ranked Tuscola.

The Warriors overpowered the Hawks, 86-27, in a Class 1A postseason contest.

Jacob Bensyl scored a team-high 10 points for Heritage.

Other teammates to reach the scoring column were Rylan White (nine points), Brennan Struck (four points), Anthony Happ (two points) and Brayden Jones (two points).

Tuscola (26-5 and ranked fifth in Class 1A) created a 30-8 lead after one quarter and expanded its margin to 55-12 at halftime.

Heritage had a 4-27 season record.

White was the team’s scoring leader, amassing 411 points and a 13.7 scoring average. He connected on a team-best 61 three-pointers with single-game highs of six twice. He collected five 20-point games, topped by a 34-point outburst against Tri-County.

Clark Roland notched 10 three-pointers for the season, Happ hit nine, Bensyl made six and Luke Miller had one.

White led the Hawks in scoring – or shared the lead – in 23 games. Struck led in four games, Bensyl in three games and Happ and Destin Nickle once apiece.

Four Hawks, besides White, posted double-digit scoring games. Struck’s high game was 18 points, Bensyl tallied a 17-point  game, Nickle had a 15-point game and Roland‘s high game was 14 points.

Jacob Bensyl, Clark Roland and Rylan White combined to score 50 points on Thursday (Feb. 15) as Heritage closed out the regular season with a 65-55 win at Decatur Unity Christian.

The Hawks overcame a 17-10 deficit after one quarter by outscoring the home team, 21-3, to take a 31-20 lead into halftime.

White led all scorers with 22 points. Bensyl and Roland each totaled 14 points. Roland’s total was a season’s high.

Sullivan took a first-quarter lead on Tuesday (Feb. 13) and never relinquished it in dispatching visiting Heritage, 62-20.

Rylan White scored a team-best nine points and hit two three-point shots. Jacob Bensyl tallied six points. Both Destin Nickle and Brennan Struck scored two points. Clark Roland contributed one free throw.

Sullivan led, 15-6, after one quarter and 29-10 at halftime.

Heritage (3-26) returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 15) at Decatur Lutheran.

Addi Hopper scored eight points on Saturday (Feb. 10), but Heritage couldn’t hang onto a fourth-quarter lead and suffered a season-ending loss to Chrisman, 37-26, in the Tri-County Class 1A regional semifinals.

Brooklyn Powell hit six points for the Hawks. Loran Tate scored five points, Gracie Tate tallied here points, Bailey Lubben made two points and Bri Ploense also finished with two points.

Heritage finished with an overall record of 2-28. The Hawks played their varsity schedule with a roster of four freshmen, four juniors and one senior (Gwen Happ).

The freshmen were Brooklyn Hardaway, Hopper, Ploense and Powell.

The juniors were Briyah Hardaway, Lubben, Gracie Tate and Loran Tate.

Five Hawks led the team – or shared the lead – in scoring in at least one game.

Hopper was the leader in 15 games, followed by Powell (10 games), Ploense (three games), Loran Tate (three games) and Gracie Tate (one game).

The team’s top individual scoring performances were 26 points by Hopper and 19 points by Powell. Ploense (10 points) also scored in double figures.

The top scorers for the season were Powell (7.1) and Hopper (7.0).

Hopper (23) connected on the most three-pointers, followed by Ploense (nine).

Powell (79 attempts) was most adept at getting to the free throw line. Hopper (58.8 percent) was the team’s most accurate free throw shooter. She finished the season by hitting 10 of her final 14 shots from the line.

Rylan White scored 14 points and Brennan Struck added 10 points on Friday (Feb. 9) for Heritage, which lost to Blue Ridge, 61-51, in its regular-season home-finale.

Jacob Bensyl scored eight points and Anthony Happ netted seven points. Lukas Miller scored five points, Clark Roland had four points and James Dillon added three points for the Hawks.

Happ and Miller both hit three-pointers for Heritage.

Blue Ridge led, 19-5, after one quarter and 37-15 at halftime.

On Saturday (Feb. 10), the Hawks took a 56-21 loss at La Salette.

Struck hit a team-high eight points. He was followed by Bensyl (six points), Eli Denmark-Collins (four points) and White (three points).

White made his team’s lone three-pointer.

La Salette led, 12-6, after one period and 26-10 at halftime.

Heritage (3-25) returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at Sullivan.

Sophomore Rylan White led Heritage in scoring for the 13^th time in his last 14 games on Tuesday (Feb. 6) in a 72-45 loss at Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond.

White netted 16 points, including two baskets from three-point range. Anthony Happ and Destin Nickle both tallied seven points.

Clark Roland scored five points and Brennan Struck scored four points. Winding up with two points apiece were James Dillon, Brayden Jones and Brendan McClellan.

Tri-County led, 15-9, after one quarter and 35-20 at halftime.

Heritage (3-23) returns to action on Friday (Feb. 9) in its home-finale against Blue Ridge.

Brooklyn Powell scored a game-high 10 points on Thursday (Feb. 1) for the Heritage girls’ basketball team, which lost its home-finale to Argenta-Oreana, 31-21.

Loran Tate contributed six points, Addi Hopper made three points and Bri Ploense finished with two points.

On Saturday (Feb. 3), the Hawks dropped a 62-25 decision at Hoopeston Area.

Powell hit a team-best eight points. Hopper and Loran Tate both contributed four points. Briyah Hardaway made the Hawks’ lone three-pointer and ended with three points. Scoring two points each were Gwen Happ, Bri Ploense and Gracie Tate.

Gracie Tate converted 2-of-2 free throw attempts, the only ones Heritage shot in the game.

The Cornjerkers led, 13-4, after one quarter and 36-10 at halftime.

Heritage (2-26) returns to action on Monday (Feb. 5) at Tri-County in the team’s regular-season finale.
