Bryson McDaniel, in the triple jump, was the top-placing Oakwood athlete in the IHSA Class 1A boys’ track and field state meet at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston.

He recorded a mark of 39 feet, 0 inches in the triple jump and ended in 18th place.

Sprinter Connor Smith finished 20th in the 400 meters (52.04 seconds) while teammate Thomas Wells took 32nd in the 1,600 meters (4:46.23) after cutting 1.77 seconds off his time from the sectional.

The Comets’ other state entries were their relays.

The 400-meter unit placed 16th (43.64 seconds), featuring McDaniel, Connor Moss, Jacob Pricer and Smith.

In the 1,600-meter relay, the grouping of Brody Taflinger, Jakob Rupp, Macen Phillips  were timed in 3:32.36.

The Oakwood 3,200-meter relay consisted of Rupp, Lucas Tyas, Phillips and Wells. Their cumulative time was 8:40.44.

Oakwood junior Connor Smith qualified for state in four events – two as an individual and two as part of relays – and the Comets produced qualifiers in nine events on Friday (May 17) in the IHSA Class 1A boys’ track and field sectional at Salt Fork.

Smith was the runner-up in both the 100 meters (11.24 seconds) and the 400 meters (personal-best 50.52 seconds), meeting the pre-determined qualifying time in both races.

Three Oakwood relays captured sectional titles.

The 400-meter unit of Bryson McDaniel, Connor Moss, Jacob Pricer and Smith were timed in 43.29 seconds.

Sharing the baton on the state-qualifying 1,600-meter relay were Connor Taflinger, Jakob Rupp, Macen Phillips and Smith. Their cumulative time was 3:32.36.

Oakwood’s 3,200-meter secured its advancement with a first-place time of 8:25.88. The relay featured Rupp, Lucas Tyas, Phillips and Thomas Wells.

Wells was the Comets’ other state qualifier. He won the 1,600-meter race in 4:48.00.

Three Oakwood runners who turned in top-10 performances also achieved personal-best times: Tyas (sixth in the 800 meters in 2:08.32), Kyler Johnson (sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.40 seconds) and Trevor McCall (seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.08 seconds).

The Comets had top-10 placers in six other events, including McDaniel in two events. He was second in the triple jump (40 feet, 3 inches), qualifying him for State, and fifth in the long jump (19 feet, 8 inches).

Other team leaders were Sailer Harrison (third in the triple jump at 38 feet, 7 inches), McCall (fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 17.29 seconds), Saul Carillo (ninth in the high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches) and Taflinger (10th in the 100 meters in 12.06 seconds).

Salt Fork earned the team sectional title with 122 points. Oakwood ran a strong second (94 points) in the 16-school meet and was followed by Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin (78 points) and Westville (73 points).

The Comets’ state qualifiers will return to action on Thursday (May 23) at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston. Those who qualify for the finals will return on Saturday (May 25).

Senior Nikita Taylor will be the Oakwood High School representative at the IHSA girls’ track and field state meet.

Taylor secured her advancement on Thursday (May 9) in the 17-school St. Anne Class 1A Sectional.

She placed second in the long jump (16 feet, 6 inches).

The Comets had top-10 finishers at sectional by three other individuals and two relays.

Taylor was third in the 400 meters (1:04.39), Aubri Elliott was third in the 200 meters (27.99 seconds) and Mady Nicoson was 10th in the discus (75 feet, 5 inches).

The top-placing Oakwood relay was the 400-meter unit of Taylor Smoot, Leanne Snow, Taylor and Elliott. Their combined time was 54.87 seconds.

The school’s 800-meter relay placed ninth in 2:10.60. The relay consisted of Smoot, Snow, Riley Denhalter and Elliott.

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin won the team title with 120 points. Oakwood finished in a tie for 12th with 22 points.

Taylor will return to action on Thursday (May 16) in the state semifinals at Charleston. All finalists return to Eastern Illinois University on Saturday (May 18).

Oakwood senior Nikita Taylor won the 400-meter race on Thursday (May 2) in the 11-school Vermilion Valley Conference girls’ track and field meet at Westville.

Taylor’s time was a personal-best 1:02.49. She was also fourth in the long jump (personal-best 16 feet, inch).

Another two-event placer for the Comets was sprinter Aubri Elliott, who ran third in the 100 meters (13.57 seconds) and fourth in the 200 meters (personal-best 28.12 seconds).

Other individual leaders for Oakwood were Quinn Sperry (sixth in the shot put at 29 feet, 2 inches), Amber Betzwiser (eighth in the 800 meters in 2:52.44) and Mady Nicoson (ninth in the shot put at 25 feet, 8 inches).

Two of the Comets’ relays also fared well.

Winding up in fourth place was the 400-meter unit of Taylor Smoot, Leanne Snow, Taylor and Elliott. Their cumulative time was 54.17 seconds.

The sixth-place 800-meter relay featured Smoot, Snow, Laylah Gibbons and Elliott. Their total time was 2:10.30.

Salt Fork won the team title with 150 points. Runner-up Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin totaled 114 points. Oakwood was fifth with 29 points.

The Comets return to action on Thursday (May 9) in the 17-school Class 1A St. Anne Sectional.

Four Oakwood athletes competed in the Lady Spartan Classic on Friday (May 3) at St. Joseph-Ogden High School.

Laylah Gibbons was 18th in the 100 meters (21.49 seconds) and 28th in the long jump (12 feet, 4 inches).

In the same events, Rylee Wright placed 21st in the 100 meters (22.61 seconds) and 38th in the long jump (10 feet, 8 inches).

Quinn Sperry ended 15th in the shot put (28 feet, 4 inches) and 26th in the discus (66 feet, 6 inches). Mady Nicoson was 20th in the discus (69 feet 8 inches) and 27th in the shot put (24 feet, 7 inches).

Three Oakwood relays turned in first-place finishes on Thursday (May 2) in the 11-team Vermilion Valley Conference boys’ track and field meet at Westville.

Also winning an event was junior Thomas Wells, who out-ran everyone in the 1,600 meters (personal-best 4:44.36).

Wells also ran on the victorious 3,200-meter relay, teaming up with Jakob Rupp, Lucas Tyas and Macen Phillips for a time of 8:36.44.

The championship 1,600-meter relay featured Rupp, Phillips, Jacob Taflinger and Connor Smith. Their cumulative time was 3:33.92.

The 400-meter relay posted a winning time of 43.78 seconds. Sharing the baton were Bryson McDaniel, Connor Moss, Jacob Pricer and Smith.

The Comets’ 800-meter relay ended seventh in 1:39.58. Sharing the baton were Connor Taflinger, Saul Carrillo, Kaden McDaniel and Jacob Taflinger.

Individually, Smith logged a pair of runner-up finishes and Bryson McDaniel contributed a second- and third-place finish.

Smith was the runner-up in the 100 meters (11.25 seconds) and the 400 meters (51.62 seconds).

Bryson McDaniel took second in the triple jump (40 feet, 3 inches) and third in the long jump (19 feet, 10 inches).

Oakwood top-10 placers who recorded personal-best performances were Sailer Harrison (fourth in the triple jump at 39 feet, 6 inches), Rupp (fifth in the 800 meters in 2:10.23), Trevor McCall (seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.84 seconds), Kyler Johnson (ninth in the discus at 97 feet, 4 inches) and Pricer (ninth in the 200 meters in 24.06 seconds).

Other Comets among the top 10 were Trevor McCall (fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.47 seconds), Johnson (fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 18.00 seconds), Tyas (ninth in the 800 meters in 2:12.90) and Alex Wells (10th in the 3,200 meters in 14:20.69).

Salt Fork won the team title with 120 points. Finishing second was Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin (99 ½ points). Oakwood was fifth with 82 points.

On Monday (May 6), Rupp, Thomas Wells and Bryson McDaniel were individual winners in a four-school Last Chance Meet at B-H/R-A.

Rupp won the 400 meters (personal-best 54.81 seconds). Wells won the 3,200 meters (personal-best 10:48.34) and McDaniel was victorious in the triple jump (40 feet, 3 inches).

Three Oakwood relays also capture first-place finishes.

The 400-meter unit was led by McDaniel, Moss, Pricer and Smith. They were timed in 44.09 seconds.

Running on the 800-meter relay were Moss, Pricer, Phillips and Smith. Their composite time was 1:35.04.

The 1,600-meter relay included Rupp, Tyas, Phillips and Thomas Wells. Their time was 3:42.38.

The Comets had runner-up finishes from hurdler McCall (17.20 seconds in the 110-meter event as well as 45.58 in the 300-meter hurdles race) and jumper Harrison (38 feet,7 inches in the triple jump).

Placing third were Tyas (800 meters in 2:12.23), Johnson (110-meter hurdles in 18.93 seconds), Bryson McDaniel (19 feet, 5 inches in the long jump) and Saul Carrillo (4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump).

Johnson took fourth in the discus (personal-best 101 feet, 5 inches).

Ben Darling had a pair of fifth-place performances, including the 800 meters where his time of 2:21.05 was a personal-best. Darling was also fifth in the 1,600 meters (5:59.46).

Trevor Hanner was fifth in the long jump (16 feet, 8 inches), Alex Wells was fifth in the 3,200 meters (14:19.00), Taflinger was fifth in the 400 meters (personal-best 56.18 seconds) and Pricer was fifth in the 100 meters (personal-best 11.87 seconds).

B-H/R-A won the meet with 66 points. Runner-up Oakwood had 48 points.

The Comets return to action on Friday (May 17) in the 17-school Salt Fork Sectional at Catlin.

Oakwood’s Bryson McDaniel was a double winner on Monday (April 29) in a six-school boys’ track and field meet at Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.

The Comets also won three of the four relays and had two other individual winners in Macen Phillips and Trevor McCall.

McDaniel won the long jump (20 feet, 4 inches) as well as the triple jump (39 feet). Phillips was triumphant in the 800 meters (personal-best 2:10.94). McCall took top honors in the 300-meter hurdles (personal-best 45.19 seconds).

McDaniel was part of the winning 400-meter relay. He teamed up with Connor Moss, Jacob Pricer and Connor Smith for a 45.65-second time.

The Comets also won the 1,600-meter relay. Sharing the baton were Jakob Rupp, Jacob Taflinger, Phillips and Smith. Their combined time was 3:42.75.

Oakwood was also first in the 3200-meter relay with a unit consisting of Rupp, Lucas Tyas, Phillips and Thomas Wells. Their cumulative time was 12:49.93.

In the 800-meter relay Oakwood took third (1:42.80). The runners consisted of Connor Taflinger, Cale Thomas, Kyler Johnson and Trevor Hanner.

Oakwood had runner-up finishes in two events. McCall took second in the 110-meter hurdles (personal-best 17.36 seconds) and Wells was the runner-up in the 800 meters (2:11.47).

Four Comets wound up in third place.

Pricer was third in the 100 meters (personal-best 11.91 seconds), Jacob Taflinger was third in the 400 meters (personal-best 57.30 seconds), Johnson was third in the 110-meter hurdles (personal-best 17.99 seconds) and Thomas was third in the discus (98 feet, 6 inches).

Moss wound up fourth in the 200 meters (personal-best 24.83 seconds).

Placing fifth for the Comets were Saul Carrillo (400 meters in 1:00.02), Rupp (800 meters in 2:15.24), Ben Darling (1,600 meters in 5:47.60) and Johnson (shot put at 33 feet and discus at a personal-best 96 feet, 1 inch).

Also establishing a personal-best was Darling in the 3,200 meters (12:34.24), an event where he finished sixth.

In the team race, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley was first (151 points) and was followed by Oakwood (134 ½ points).

The Comets will return to action on Thursday (May 2) in the Vermilion Valley Conference Meet at Westville.

Oakwood sprinter Aubri Elliott was a top-six placer in two individual events on Friday (April 26) at the 19-school Monticello girls’ track and field invitational.

Elliott ran a personal-best 13.34 seconds in the 100 meters and placed fifth. She was also sixth in the 200 meters (29.18).

Elliott was also a member of the 400-meter relay, which finished 11th in a season-best time of 56.76 seconds. She was joined by Taylor Smoot, Leanne Snow and Nikita Taylor.

Oakwood placed 18th with three points. Meet champion Normal University High had 102 points.

Saul Carrillo finished ninth in the 200 meters (personal-best 25.28 seconds), Trevor McCall was 10th in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.91 seconds) and Kyler Johnson was ninth in the JV shot put (32 feet, 5 inches).

Three of the Comets’ varsity relays captured top-10 finishes.

The 3,200-meter grouping of Jakob Rupp, Lucas Tyas, Macen Phillips and Thomas Wells were third in 8:54.92.

Placing fifth was the 400-meter unit of Bryson McDaniel, Connor Moss, Jacob Pricer and Smith. Their combined time was 45.24 seconds.

Oakwood’s 800-meter varsity relay ended in 10th. The runners on that relay were Moss, Carrillo, Pricer and Jacob Taflinger. They were timed in 1:40.55.

The Comets’ 400- and 800-meter JV entries had the same runners: Jack Ajster, Cale Thomas, Trevor Hanner and Connor Taflinger.

They ran sixth in the 400 (48.90 seconds) and were eighth in the 800 (1:44.01).

Oakwood will return to action on Tuesday (April 23) in the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Invitational.
