Case Kopacz fired a 95 and placed 65^th in an IHSA Class 1A boys’ sectional golf tournament on Monday (Oct. 4) at Balmoral Woods Country Club, in Beecher.

There were 111 total competitors.

Kopacz, a second-year golfer competing in sectionals for the first time, did not qualify for state.

For the season, Kopacz had a team-best 46.4 nine-hole stroke average, the best among the Comets. He posted the team’s best score in 12 of 16 meets, including his last eight.

In the regular-season finale, Oakwood’s Lily Harden shot a 69 and placed second in a dual meet at Shewami. The round was her second-best of the season.

She will return to action on Thursday (Sept. 30) in a Class 1A regional tournament at Champaign’s Lincolnshire Fields Country Club.

Case Kopacz was the lone Oakwood golfer to qualify for the Class 1A boys’ golf sectional based on results from the Wednesday (Sept. 29) regional tournament at Turtle Run, in Danville.

Kopacz fired an 88 and placed 11^th overall at the regional. In 11 of 15 meets this season, Kopacz has led the team or shared the team lead in scoring.

The Comets’ other participants at the regional were Kyle McFarland (104), Mason Goodner (110) and Nate Stewart (124).

Oakwood’s composite score was 420, which enabled the team to finish eighth in a meet with 13 teams. The Comets were seeded 11^th. Regional champion Monticello produced a 330 team composite.

In its final pre-regional tuneup on Monday (Sept. 27), Oakwood (8-12) defeated Hoopeston Area, but finished behind Milford in a three-school meet at Shewami.

Milford’s composite score was 180. Oakwood ended with a 217 and Hoopeston Area totaled 233.

Kopacz had the top round for the Comets, firing a 48. Stewart finished with a 55. Goodner and McFarland each ended with 57s.

Kopacz will compete in the sectional on Monday (Oct. 4) at Balmoral Woods, in Crete.

The top three teams advanced to the sectional as did the top10 players not on qualifying teams.

Oakwood junior Lily Harden fired a 139 on Thursday (Sept. 23) and finished in a tie for 19^th place individually in the Vermilion Valley Conference girls’ golf tournament at Harrison Park, in Danville.

She was the Comets’ lone competitor.

Oakwood junior Case Kopacz carded a 90 on Thursday (Sept. 23) and tied for third individually in the Vermilion Valley Conference boys’ golf tournament at Harrison Park, in Danville.

Watseka won the team title (359), followed by Iroquois West (382). Oakwood was 10^th (481) in the 10-school event.

The Comets’ other leaders were Kyle McFarland (104) and Nate Stewart (125).

Ethan Brewer was the lone Oakwood runner on Tuesday (Sept. 21) in a four-school boys’ cross-country meet at the UI Arboretum, in Urbana.

Brewer placed 38^th in 25 minutes, 31.18 minutes for the 3-mile course.

The Comets return to action on Saturday (Sept. 25) in the Spartan Classic, at SJ-O.

Oakwood golfer Case Kopacz tied for medalist honors on Monday (Sept. 20) in a three-team at Harrison Park.

The junior fired a 40, helping the Comets to a runner-up finish.

The meet champion was Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin (177), followed by Oakwood (223) and Westville (251).

Other Comet leaders were Kyle McFarland (49) and Nate Stewart (54).

On Saturday (Sept. 18), the Comets didn’t field a full team at the Paris Invitational, but Kopacz shot a team-best 90, for his best 18-hole score of the season.

McFarland finished with a 99.

McFarland shot a 47.

Teammate Case Kopacz tied for fourth individually with a 50.

Other Oakwood participants were Nate Stewart (56), Mason Goodner (58), Will Crippin (72) and Lily Harden (72).

Danville was the meet winner with a team composite of 200. Oakwood was second (211), followed by Westville (240).
