The eighth-grade Prairieview-Ogden girls’ basketball had their fourth straight game settled by no more than eight points on Monday (Oct. 18) when they prevailed at Flatville over Unity, 28-27.

Caroline Aden hit a team-high 14 points in the Eighth-Grade Night contest. Teammate Emma McKinney added six points.

On Tuesday (Oct. 19), the Mustangs suffered a 27-16 loss at St. Joseph.

Aden, McKinney and Ally Schmitz dropped four points apiece. Taylor Maddock scored three points and Mackenzie Loschen netted a free throw.

The PVO seventh-graders came out on the short end of a 27-12 score against Tolono Unity on Monday (Oct. 18).

Olivia Berlatsky and Kellyn Irwin each scored four points.

“My teams played much better tonight,” coach Teresa Aden said. “The seventh-graders are really starting to understand what needs to be done.”

On Tuesday (Oct. 19), the seventh-graders were beaten at St. Joseph, 17-10. Emerson Williams tallied six points. Ana Hammond contributed three points and Irwin added a point.

On Thursday (Oct 14), both the seventh- and eighth-grade PVO girls’ basketball teams suffered losses at Salt Fork.

The seventh-graders lost, 38-0. The eighth-graders dropped a 28-20 decision.

Schmitz scored six points and Maddock added five points.

PVO returns to action on Thursday (Oct. 21) at home against Villa Grove. The seventh-graders are 1-6. The eighth-graders are 3-4.

The St. Joseph eighth-grade girls’ basketball team extended its winning streak to four with three wins in a seven-day span.

On Wednesday (Oct. 13), the Panthers won at Westville, 30-10. That was followed with a 34-4 win at home over Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Thursday (Oct. 14).

Kayla Osterbur hit a game-high 11 points at Westville. Timera Blackburn-Kelley netted five points. Finishing with four points apiece were Kenzie Atwood, Kaitlyn Beyers and Katie Erickson.

Against PBL, St. Joseph kept the visitors scoreless in the second half. Erickson was the offensive leader with a game-high 10 points. Blackburn-Kelley chipped in with eight points.

On Tuesday (Oct. 19), St. Joseph edged neighboring rival Prairieview Ogden, 27-16, behind a 13-point outburst from Blackburn-Kelley. Erickson hit nine points. Osterbur made three points and Kaitlyn Beyers added the other two points.

The eighth-graders have a 7-1 season record.

St. Joseph’s seventh-grade squad continued its hot streak. The Panthers have wins in three of their last four games.

The Panthers lost at Westville, 16-15, but beat PBL, 15-11, before notching a 17-10 triumph on Tuesday (Oct. 19) against Prairieview Ogden.

Hayden Dahl made seven points to lead the way at Westville. Kiah Riesel tallied six points and Adeline Stevens swished two free throws.

Against PBL, Abigail Crider made a team-high eight points. Dahl contributed five points and Stevens finished with two points.

Against PVO, Dahl and Mia Jones each bagged three-point shots. Dahl’s four total points was a team-high. Jones, Crider and Adeline Stevens all scored three points. Brynn Ikemire and Kiah Riesel chipped in with two points apiece.

The seventh-graders have a 3-5 season record. They have had four consecutive games decided by no more than seven points.

The St. Joseph teams will return to action on Thursday (Oct. 21) at home against Champaign St. Matthew.

Ally Schmitz’s layup in the final 10 seconds sent Prairieview Ogden past Oakwood, 21-19, on Thursday (Oct. 7) in an eighth-grade girls’ basketball game.

Caroline Aden led PVO with nine points.

In the seventh-grade game, Oakwood topped the Mustangs, 18-14. PVO trimmed its deficit to two points in the last 2 minutes.

Olivia Berlatsky led PVO with four points.

The games were the first for PVO in 14 days. The team had a layoff due to COVID-19.

“It was a tough game coming off our COVID week, but my girls really gutted it out,” PVO coach Teresa Aden said. “I love this group. They work hard and do everything I ask.”

PVO’s eighth-grade team has a 2-2 record after suffering a 23-18 overtime loss at home to Armstrong-Potomac on Tuesday (Oct. 12). Schmitz scored six points.

“The girls worked hard, but just didn’t have enough left in the tank to finish,” Aden said.

The seventh-grade PVO team is 1-3 overall after dropping a 38-11 decision to Armstrong-Potomac on Tuesday. Belle Frerichs led with five points.

The school had four games postponed during its quarantine.

The Mustangs return to action on Thursday (Oct. 14) at Salt Fork in a makeup game.

Oakwood Junior High Girls’ Basketball

Oakwood’s seventh-grade girls’ basketball team won its third successive game on Tuesday (Oct. 12), topping Rossville-Alvin at home, 12-7.

Brooklyn Myers tallied all of her game-high 10 points in the second half. Avery Trimmell added two points.

On Thursday (Oct. 7), also at home, Oakwood topped Prairieview Ogden, 18-14.

Myers led the way with 10 points. Lainee Smith hit four points and teammates Ireland Harrison and Jocelyn Wood each chipped in with two points.

“We really locked down on our defense and closed the game,” Knights’ coach Phillip Myers said.

The eighth-grade Knights snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday, handling Rossville-Alvin 13-9.

Caydence Vermillion netted a team-high five points. Gracie Hanner and Brynlie Wait each hit three points. Mady Nicoson registered two points.

“Great overall game,” Phillip Myers said. “Girls really played hard. Brynlie Wait was great on the boards tonight offensively and defensively.”

On Thursday, the eighth-graders were edged by Prairieview Ogden, 21-19, when PVO hit the go-ahead basket in the final 10 seconds.

Vermillion was the team’s top scorer, with nine points. Wait came off the bench to tally seven points. Nicoson collected two points and Sophia Aquino made one point.

Both Oakwood teams have 3-4 overall records and will return to action on Thursday (Oct. 14) at Potomac-Armstrong.

The St. Joseph Junior High eighth-grade girls’ basketball team improved its season record to 4-1 on Tuesday (Oct. 12) with a 28-15 triumph at Champaign Franklin.

Timera Blackburn-Kelley scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the opening quarter as the Panthers pushed into a 9-2 lead.

Kayla Oserbur netted eight points and Katie Erickson ended with three points. Scoring two points apiece were Lexi Lackey and Kaitlyn Beyers.

The Panthers bounced back from a loss in their previous game, on Thursday (Oct. 7) at Cissna Park, 38-13.

Osterbur hit a team-high eight points, including 4-for-4 from the free throw line against Cissna Park. Brooks made four points and Blackburn-Kelley had one.

The St. Joseph seventh-graders reached the win column on Tuesday (Oct. 12), prevailing at Franklin, 26-19.

Hayden Dahl had the team’s high-point game for the season, 14 points.

The teams were tied, 12-12, at halftime, but the Panthers limited Franklin to three second-half field goals and earned the win.

Teammates who contributed to the scoring column were Abigail Crider (six points), Maggie Hewkin (two points), Brynn Ikemire (two points) and Mia Jones (two points).

In the Thursday (Oct. 9) loss at Cissna Park, 29-15, Dahl scored five points. Mia Jones and Adeline Stevens each contributed three points. Crider and Iris Davis both added two points.

The seventh-grade Panthers are 1-4.

Both St. Joseph teams return to action on Thursday (Oct. 14) at home against Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

Tamara Blackburn-Kelley scored 10 points on Thursday as the eighth-grade St. Joseph girls’ basketball team won a low-scoring game at Paris Mayo, 14-12.

The teams were tied, 9-9, after three quarters.

Blackburn-Kelley and Kenzie Atwood hit baskets in the fourth quarter and Ashlynn Miller netted one free throw to keep the Panthers in the lead.

In another low-scoring game on Tuesday (Oct. 5), the St. Joseph eighth-grade girls’ basketball team posted a narrow 11-5 win at home against Oakwood.

The Panthers (3-0) return to action on Thursday (Oct. 7) at Cissna Park.

St. Joseph Seventh-Grade Girls’ Basketball

Hayden Dahl scored three points and Abigail Crider hit two points for the St. Joseph seventh-grade girls’ basketball team, which dropped a 34-5 decision at Paris Mayo on Thursday (Sept. 30).

On Tuesday (Oct. 5), the seventh-grade St. Joseph girls’ basketball team battled back from a game-long deficit at home to create overtime against Oakwood.

A late score by the Panthers forced the extra session. The home team led late in the first OT until Brooklynn Myers drained two free throws with nine seconds to go, forcing another overtime.

Oakwood went on to post a 20-18 triumph even though St. Joseph reached a season’s high for points scored in a game.

St. Joseph (0-3) returns to action on Thursday (Oct. 7) at Cissna Park.

In its first game on Tuesday (Sept. 21), the Mustangs were bested at Cissna Park, 34-11. Bella Frerichs, a sixth-grader, led the team with six points.

Olivia Berlatsky netted a game-high 10 points for PVO on Thursday (Sept. 23) as the team won its first game at home, rolling past Chrisman 36-4.

The next game for PVO (1-1) is uncertain due to COVID-19.
