Something new is happening in Oakwood on Wednesday evenings.

After years of studying other local farmers markets, Oakwood has partnered with the Danville Farmers Market to bring a variety of local goods, produce, homemade items and novelties, such as BBQ and kettlecorn to Oakwood Park, located at 203 W Longstreth St, on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m..

The market will run through September.

Oakwood Village President Clay Woodward was the catalyst for the market.

“Clay is all about supporting the wants and needs of our community as well as surrounding communities while promoting entrepreneurship, providing the opportunity to shop local good, homegrown good, homemade goods, products of good quality to the community and a social gathering for people to meet and shop locally,” Village of Oakwood Office Manager Julie Leverenz wrote.

Leverenz said she was pleased with the turnout at the farmers market, despite the storms that surrounded the area, Wednesday.

Because of the spring rain that has plagued much of the midwest, produce was scarce during the first event, but Leverenz said it is sure to come within weeks.

The Village continues to look for vendors who want to set up a booth at the market. To become a vendor, contact Leverenz at 217.354.4255 or oakwood-village@comcast.net or visit the Village Office Building at 106 S. Oakwood St.

The market will be canceled in the event of rain or flooding. Oakwood will also not have a market on July 4 in lieu of the Fourth of July Celebration.
