Salt Fork handed Oakwood a 29-27, 25-18 loss on Monday (Oct. 18) in the fifth-place match of the Vermilion County Tournament at Georgetown.

Madison Doan led the Comets with six kills. Luci Morris totaled four blocks and Karsen Rupp handed out 16 assists.

On Tuesday (Oct. 19), the  Comets swept Schlarman Academy, 25-10, 25-9 with Rupp serving five aces and  Morris landing four aces.

Spearheading the offensive attack were Morris (six kills), Doan (five kills) and Nikita Taylor (five kills).

Rupp distributed a team-high 13 assists.

Oakwood (4-17) returns to action on Thursday (Oct. 21) at Rantoul.

Oakwood junior Case Kopacz carded a 90 on Thursday (Sept. 23) and tied for third individually in the Vermilion Valley Conference boys’ golf tournament at Harrison Park, in Danville.

Watseka won the team title (359), followed by Iroquois West (382). Oakwood was 10th (481) in the 10-school event.

The Comets’ other leaders were Kyle McFarland (104) and Nate Stewart (125).

Oakwood (7-11) returns to action on Monday (Sept. 27) against Hoopeston Area and Milford at Shewami Country Club.

The Comets more than held their own in the first half on Wednesday against unbeaten and state-ranked Bismarck-Henning in a semifinal game of the St. Joseph-Ogden Class 2A boys’ basketball regional tournament.

Oakwood held the lead at halftime 28-25 before falling 62-52.

Josh Young led the Comets with 14 points. Jayden Cox added 10 points. Jackson Powell scored nine points and teammates Elijah Harden and Dalton Hobick finished with seven points apiece.

B-H/R-A (31-0) used a 22-14 third-quarter spurt to take a five-point lead into the final period.

Oakwood hit 7 of 8 free throws.

On Monday, for the third time in four games this season, the Comets topped Vermilion County rival Georgetown-Ridge Farm on the basketball court.

Oakwood prevailed 59-50 in a first-round game of the SJ-O regional.

Young hit a team-high 13 points and was one of four squad members to score in double figures. Cox and Harden each tallied 11 points. Brevin Wells finished with 10 points.

Young was the team’s top scorer in 11 of the final 14 games this season.

G-RF led 14-12 after one quarter, but Oakwood had regained the lead, 30-26, at halftime.

The Comets hit 20 of 29 free throws. G-RF made 7 of 16 free throw attempts.

Oakwood ends with a 17-15 season record.

Young was the team’s top scorer this season in 15 games. Wells set the pace in 13 games. Isiah Ruch led in five games, Powell in three with Kade Anderson and Harden leading in one apiece.

Wells knocked down 71 three-point shots this season, accounting for two-thirds of his 107 field goals. Powell drained 41 three-pointers and Cox netted 24.

Oakwood’s top single-game point totals were 24 by Wells, 23 by Harden and 23 by Young.

For the second time in five days, the Comets were victorious in an overtime game when they topped visiting Chrisman 69-64 in a Vermilion Valley Conference game at home.

The teams were tied 58-58 after regulation. Chrisman’s only points in OT were on three-pointers.

The Comets nailed 5 of 6 free throws in the extra session to pull away. Kade Anderson and Josh Young each tallied four points in OT and Brevin Wells contributed three points, all from the foul line.

Overall, Oakwood made 12 of 17 free throws.

Chrisman led 35-32 at halftime.

Young hit the 20-point mark for the fourth time in his last five games, tallying 22 points. Wells chipped in with 15 points and Anderson totaled 10.

Oakwood (14-13) returns to action on Friday at Westville. The Comets are 7-3 in VVC contests.

The Comets are trying to extend their streak of consecutive winning seasons in boys’ basketball to six.

The Comets couldn’t hang onto a lead they held after each of the first three quarters on Tuesday and suffered a 57-53 Vermilion Valley Conference loss at Hoopeston Area.

Josh Young led Oakwood with 20 points. Jayden Cox hit 10 points and teammates Elijah Harden and Isiah Ruch both totaled eight points.

Oakwood led 18-11 after one period, 26-25 at halftime and 37-34 after three quarters.

Young had 10 of his points in the fourth quarter.

The Comets attempted just four free throws overall and they all came in the final stanza.

Oakwood (12-13) returns to action on Friday at Salt Fork.

Milford recovered from a 39-34 deficit after three periods to post a 54-49 triumph.

Jackson Powell and Brevin Wells each tallied 14 points to lead Oakwood. Each player hit two three-point shots.

Josh Young chipped in with nine points.

The Comets (12-12) are 5-2 against Vermilion Valley Conference foes and return to action on Tuesday at Hoopeston Area.

Five players sunk three-point shots on Tuesday as the Comets went on the road and dispatched Armstrong-Potomac 74-63 in a Vermilion Valley Conference game.

Josh Young fired in a game-high 21 points. Brevin Wells scored 13 points and Isiah Ruch totaled 11 points.

Oakwood rolled up 41 first-half points and held an eight-point lead at intermission.

Wells nailed three of the team’s eight three-point baskets. Jackson Powell had two three-pointers. Young, Jayden Cox and Kade Anderson each hit one three-pointer.

The Comets (12-11) are 5-1 against Vermilion Valley Conference foes and return to action on Friday at home against Milford.

The Comets’ streak of consecutive Vermilion County Tournament basketball championships ended at three when Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin recorded a 33-19 win on Friday in the finals at Danville’s Palmer Arena.

This year was the fourth in a row that the same teams played in the County Tournament championship game.

Ashlynn Pinnick scored six points and Katelyn Young had four points for Oakwood.

In December, B-H/R-A had lost to Oakwood 39-32.

The Comets (19-6) return to action tonight at home against Chrisman.

The Comets needed a basket by Brevin Wells and four free throws by Isaiah Ruch in overtime to seize a win from Westville, 49-46, on Saturday in the fifth-place game of the Vermilion County Tournament at Danville’s Palmer Arena.

The teams were tied 43-43 after regulation. Oakwood carried a 36-27 lead into the final period.

Ruch tallied a team-high 14 points. Josh Young added 13 points. Elijah Harden and Jackson Powell each contributed seven points.

In Thursday’s game, the Comets dropped a 50-38 decision to Salt Fork in the county tournament.

The Storm jumped into a 14-7 first-quarter lead and built its margin from there.

Sophomore Young hit for 12 points and led the team in scoring for the third game in a row.

Powell drained three three-point shots and finished with 11 points. Wells added nine points.

Oakwood (11-11) returns to action on Tuesday at Armstrong-Potomac.

Josh Young scored all 12 of his team-high points in the third period against Georgetown-Ridge Farm, but the Buffaloes prevailed 48-36.

Jackson Powell scored eight points for Oakwood, which trailed 22-15 at halftime.

G-RF hit 13 of 17 free throw attempts and advanced into Saturday’s championship game.
