The Knights reached a season’s high for runs on Saturday, winning a 23-8 non-conference decision at Urbana.

Rylee Wright pitched all seven innings, yielding 11 hits. She walked four and struck out five, picking up her first win of the season.

She was backed by a 16-hit attack.

Leading the offensive onslaught was Taylor Smoot, who was 4-for-5, including a three-run home run. Overall, Smoot drove in five runs.

Samantha Dunnavon and Karleigh Nelson each collected three hits and added two RBI apiece.

Erin Ware had two hits and teammate Sophia Hart knocked in three runs.

“We’ve been working on hitting and it showed today,” coach Dave Markwell said.

Through five games, Oakwood is averaging 12 runs per game.

In a junior varsity slugfest, Urbana edged Oakwood, 15-14.

On Tuesday (Sept. 8), the Knights couldn’t hang onto a 3-2 fourth-inning lead and suffered a 12-3 loss at Hoopeston Area.

“Errors are catching up to us,” Markwell said. “They scored five runs on two hits and we made three errors in the fourth inning.

“We’re inexperienced, and that’s showing against good teams.”

Wright collected two of Oakwood’s four hits. Smoot and Ware also had hits. Wright, Smoot and Ware all scored a run.

Bella Davenport (2-2) pitched six innings and struck out five batters.

Oakwood (3-3) returns to action on Thursday (Sept 10) at home against Georgetown-Ridge Farm.
