Grand Slams by Dunavan and Enos Power Oakwood to High-Scoring Victory Over Heritage

Samantha Dunavan and Gracie Enos blasted grand slam home runs to center field in consecutive innings on Wednesday (April 17) to highlight Oakwood’s 21-11 softball win at home over Heritage.

Enos finished the game 4-for-4 and Dunavan was 3-for-3. Each player collected five RBI.

The Comets pounded 26 hits. Other offensive catalysts were Bella Bradford (4-for-4), Caydence Vermillion (4-for-5), Olivia Fegett (3-for-3), Gracie Hanner (3-for-4) and Karleigh Nelson (2-for-4). Vermillion drove in three runs. Jada Finley collected two RBI.

Sophia Hart batted once and ripped a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Dunavan powered her homer in the first inning as part of a six-run outburst. Enos’ homer came during an 11-run second inning.

In her last four games, Enos is 10-for-12 with three home runs.

Dunavan, Enos and Hanner all tallied three runs. Bradford, Nelson and Vermillion all scored twice each.

Enos, who was backed by an errorless defense, picked up the pitching win. She walked four and struck out six hitters.

On Monday (April 15), Hanner pounded three hits – and also stole home – but Oakwood’s softball team dropped a 7-5 decision at Hoopeston Area.

Hanner’s steal of home came during a three-run sixth inning when Oakwood surged into a 5-4 lead. Two of Hanner’s hits were doubles.

Enos drilled two hits, including a double, for the Comets. Bradford, Dunavan and Nelson all finished with one hit.

Bradford and Hanner scored twice each and Dunavan tallied one run. Hanner knocked in two runs. Both Dunavan and Enos had one RBI.

Vermillion pitched a complete game for the Comets. She fanned six batters and issued four walks.

On Tuesday (April 16), Oakwood dropped a 13-4 decision at home against Covington, Ind.

Fegett rapped two hits and drove in two runs. Bradford, Dunavan, Enos and Hart all socked one hit. Dunavan’s hit was a triple. She also had an RBI.

Oakwood (4-13) returns to action on Friday (April 19) at Salt Fork.
