With sophomore Samantha Dunavan hammering home runs in each game, Oakwood’s softball team has put together back-to-back wins this week.

The Comets recorded a 15-7 victory on Tuesday (March 28) at Shiloh and followed up on Wednesday (March 29) at home with an 8-3 conquest of Blue Ridge.

Against Shiloh, Gracie Hanner, Sophia Hart, Lacey Harrison and Olivia Fegett all produced at least two hits. Hanner led the way, finishing 3-for-5. Her two-run double in the first inning lifted Oakwood into a lead it never lost. Caydence Vermillion drew two walks.

Highlighting a five-run fifth inning for the Comets were runs driven in by Dunavan, Harrison and Audrey Schnaus. Overall, Hanner and Harrison delivered three RBI. Dunavan knocked in two runs.

Rylee Wright earned the pitching win. She permitted three hits and two runs in three innings. She struck out two. Reliever Gracie Enos finished off the pitching duties and recorded three strikeouts.

Against Blue Ridge, a triple by Harrison and an error helped Oakwood build a 3-1 first-inning lead.

Dunavan’s homer highlighted a four-run sixth inning. Harrison, who ended 2-for-4, also had an RBI in the sixth. Dunavan totaled four RBI and Harrison had three RBI.

Enos pitched a complete game, scattering four hits and three runs over seven innings. She fanned seven batters.

On Monday (March 27), Oakwood was held scoreless, dropping a 16-0 decision in a non-conference game to visiting Tolono Unity.

Enos, who registered three strikeouts, took the loss.

Dunavan had the Comets’ lone hit.

Oakwood (2-5) returns to action on Thursday (March 30) at Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond.
