Oakwood track and field places third at Bismarck-Henning/Rosville-Alvin

Oakwood’s Bryson McDaniel and Thomas Wells were individual winners on Tuesday (May 9) in a six-school boys’ track and field meet at Bismarck-Henning/Rosville-Alvin.

As a team, the Comets placed third with 70 points. Meet champion Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin totaled 174 points and was followed by Westville with 114 points..

McDaniel tied for first in the triple jump (39 feet, 8 inches) and Wells was triumphant in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 58.80 seconds).

Placing second for Oakwood were Jack Ajster in the 300-meter hurdles (personal-best 49.70 seconds) and Connor Smith in the 400 meters (53.13 seconds).

The Comets’ 3,200-meter relay ran second overall with the school’s quickest time in the past seven years (9:12.22).

Sharing the baton were Wells, Ben Darling, Macen Phillips and Jakob Rupp. Phillips was inserted as a sub for Grant Brewer and ran 800 meters for the first time in his prep career.

Other Comets who secured top-six finishes were: Sailer Harrison (fourth in the triple jump at 35 feet, 8 inches and sixth in the 400 meters with a personal-best 58.18 seconds), McDaniel (fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a personal-best 18.90 seconds and fourth in the long jump at 18 feet, 3 inches), Jacob Pricer (fifth in the 200 meters with a personal-best 25.21 seconds), Alex Wells (fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 54.92 seconds), Doug Myers (sixth in the discus at 108 feet, 10 inches) and Tucker Pesek (sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a personal-best 19.90 seconds).

The Comets placed fourth with two of their relay entries.

The 400-meter foursome featured McDaniel, Pricer, Connor Taflinger and Noah Phillips. They were timed in 48.07 seconds.

Handling the baton for the 1,600-meter relay were Kaden McDaniel, Rupp, Macen Phillips and Smith. Their cumulative time was 3:51.18.

In all, Oakwood athletes established nearly a dozen personal-bests.

Besides the ones previously noted, others were by Noah Phillips (eighth in the 100 meters in 12.06 seconds), Pricer (12th in the 100 meters in 12.35 seconds), Ajster (16th in the 100 meters in 12.82 seconds), Pesek (ninth in the 200 meters in 26.62 seconds) and Taflinger (11th in the 200 meters in 26.97 seconds).

Oakwood will return to action on Friday (May 19) in the 18-school Westville Class 1A Sectional.
