Oakwood starters earn spots on Vermilion County teams

By Fred Kroner

All five starters on a 25-win Oakwood boys’ basketball team earned recognition on one of the all-Vermilion County teams that were selected by the coaches.

The 10-player first team featured Alec Harrison and Jackson Dudley. The eight-player second team included Carsen Dudley and Brody Taflinger. The six-player honorable mention unit had Cort Vermillion as one of its members.

In separate voting, three Comets earned mention on one of the all-Vermilion Valley Conference teams.

Harrison was the school’s lone representative on the five-player first unit. Jackson Dudley was one of six athletes honored on the third team. Carsen Dudley was chosen for the 13-player honorable mention squad.

Carsen Dudley was the lone freshman to be honored by the VVC coaches.

Oakwood’s five starters this season averaged between 7.9 and 12.0 points per game and four of the five nailed at least 34 three-pointers for the season.

The scoring mainstays were Harrison (12.0), Jackson Dudley (11.7), Carsen Dudley (11.4), Vermillion (8.0) and Taflinger (7.9). Between them, they connected on 218 three-point shots with Jackson Dudley hitting 70 of those.

Individually, all five had games where they scored at least 19 points.

The five also combined to score in double figures 81 times. Collectively, they teamed up to hit 64.7 percent of their free throws (229 of 354).
