Oakwood athletes Jaydah Arrowsmith and Nikita Taylor were among the 10 -players chosen for the Vermilion County girls’ basketball first team.

The Comets had one other player honored. Gracie Hanner was one of seven County players picked for the honorable mention unit.

In separate voting for the all-Vermilion Valley Conference team, Arrowsmith was one of the five first-team choices. Taylor was one of 13 VVC players to warrant honorable mention status.

Arrowsmith scored in double figures in 26 of 33 games and averaged a team-high 14.4 points per game. She had seven games of 20, or more, points.

Taylor averaged 8.8 points per game. She had a high game of 22 points. Hanner averaged 4.3 points per game with a high game of 13 points.

All five starters on a 25-win Oakwood boys’ basketball team earned recognition on one of the all-Vermilion County teams that were selected by the coaches.

The 10-player first team featured Alec Harrison and Jackson Dudley. The eight-player second team included Carsen Dudley and Brody Taflinger. The six-player honorable mention unit had Cort Vermillion as one of its members.

In separate voting, three Comets earned mention on one of the all-Vermilion Valley Conference teams.

Harrison was the school’s lone representative on the five-player first unit. Jackson Dudley was one of six athletes honored on the third team. Carsen Dudley was chosen for the 13-player honorable mention squad.

Carsen Dudley was the lone freshman to be honored by the VVC coaches.

Oakwood’s five starters this season averaged between 7.9 and 12.0 points per game and four of the five nailed at least 34 three-pointers for the season.

The scoring mainstays were Harrison (12.0), Jackson Dudley (11.7), Carsen Dudley (11.4), Vermillion (8.0) and Taflinger (7.9). Between them, they connected on 218 three-point shots with Jackson Dudley hitting 70 of those.

Individually, all five had games where they scored at least 19 points.

The five also combined to score in double figures 81 times. Collectively, they teamed up to hit 64.7 percent of their free throws (229 of 354).

Jaethan Perez and Drake Roberts were the top scorers for the Oakwood eighth-grade boys’ basketball team.

For the team’s 22 games, they ended the year within one point of each other.

Perez scored 225 points (10.2 per-game average) and Roberts tallied 224 points (also a 10.2 per-game average).

Perez made more than half of the free throws that the Knights converted for the season. He nailed 63 shots from the free throw line out of the team’s total of 113 conversions.

Riglee Hart was the team-leader in three-point conversions (19), followed by Roberts (17), Lane Stitt (10) and Perez (nine).

Six squad members had games where they scored in double figures. Roberts had a top game of 22 points and Perez’s best was 20 points.

Others to reach double digits were Hart (17 points), Xander Wilson (14 points), Nathan Young (12 points) and Stitt (10 points).

Perez led the team – or shared the lead – in scoring nine times. Roberts was the leader or co-leader in eight games. Hart led three times, Wilson led twice and Young led once.

Other squad members who reached the scoring column during the season were Dalton Bowman, Rourke Harrison, Ethan Huchel and Rudy Hunsberger.

The Oakwood eighth-graders, coached by Parker Lee, finished the season with a 13-9 record.

The youthful Oakwood seventh-grade boys’ basketball team had eight players score points during the season. Four were seventh-graders and the other four were sixth-graders.

Seventh-grader Bryson Deline was the team’s top scorer in 12 games. Sixth-graders were the leaders in five other games: Keatyn Bruens (three games), Camden Hazelbaker (one game) and Hunter Hubbard (one game).

Deline had the team’s top scoring average (6.9 per game) and made the most three-pointers (11). Bruens was second with seven three-point conversions.

Bruens had the squad’s top single-game scoring performance (21 points). Deline’s top scoring game was 16 points.

The remainder of the team’s roster consisted of seventh-grader Owen Fegett, Kylar Hartley and Gavin Wells along with sixth-grader Jordan Flanagan.

The seventh-grade team ended with an 0-15 record.

Top-seeded Watseka ousted Oakwood from the Bismarck-Henning Class 2A IHSA girls’ basketball regional on Monday (Feb.12), 48-26, in the semifinals.

The Comets were led by Jaydah Arrowsmith with 11 points. Nikita Taylor finished with eight points. Gracie Hanner hit three points. Contributing two points apiece were Bella Bradford and Luci Morris.

Oakwood finishes the season with an overall record of 13-20 and 6-6 in the Vermilion Valley Conference.

Arrowsmith led the team – or shared the lead – in scoring in 26 games. Taylor led in seven games and Hanner in three.

Arrowsmith (14.4 average) and Taylor (8.8) were the team’s top scorers.

Arrowsmith popped in a team-leading 49 three-pointers. She was followed by Hanner (12) and Taylor Smoot (eight).

The team’s most accurate free throw shooters were Arrowsmith (57.8 percent) and Bella Bradford (53.6 percent).

Arrowsmith (192 attempts) and Taylor (138 attempts) were most adept at getting to the free throw line.

Alec Harrison totaled 11 points and Carsen Dudley contributed 10 points on Tuesday (Feb. 13) as the Oakwood boys’ basketball team concluded its regular season by rallying for a 39-38 win at home over La Salette.

The Comets trailed, 15-9, after one quarter and 32-29 after three periods.

Brody Taflinger scored seven points. Jackson Dudley and Cort Vermillion each added four points. Bryson McDaniel netted the team’s other three points.

Carsen Dudley fired in two three-pointers. McDaniel and Taflinger each hit one three-pointer.

Oakwood (24-7) returns to action in the Oakwood Class 2A Regional on Monday (Feb. 19) against 12th-seeded Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond. The Comets are the No. 8 seed.

Monday’s winner will face third-seeded Shelbyville in the semifinals on Wednesday (Feb 21).

Senior Jaydah Arrowsmith poured in a career-high 32 points on Saturday (Feb. 10) as Oakwood avenged two regular-season losses to Hoopeston Area with a 50-37 triumph in a quarterfinal Class 2A regional tournament game on the Cornjerkers’ court.

Hoopeston shot into a 14-5 lead after one quarter, but the Comets had gained the lead, 18-16, at halftime.

Arrowsmith’s previous high game this year was 25 points.

Nikita Taylor contributed 10 points. Bella Bradford registered four points. Both Gracie Hanner and Luci Morris wound up with two points. Arrowsmith hit both of the Oakwood three-pointers.

Oakwood had dropped decisions by nine and six points to Hoopeston earlier in the season.

The Comets (13-19) return to action on Monday (Feb. 12) against Watseka in the 6 p.m. game at Bismarck-Henning. Oakwood was the No. 7 seed, Hoopeston was the No. 6 seed. Watseka is the No. 1 seed.

Oakwood also lost to Watseka in December.

Four players scored in double figures for Oakwood, which posted a 75-39 win over Schlarman Academy, in Danville, on Friday (Feb. 9).

Alec Harrison was tops on the team with 18 points. Jackson Dudley recorded 17 points, Bryson McDaniel matched his season’s high with 12 points and Brody Taflinger ended with 10 points.

Also reaching the scoring column for the Comets were Cort Vermillion (five points), Carsen Dudley (four points), Ben Darling (three points), Alex Wallace (three points), Sam Woodard (two points) and Derek Drews (one point).

McDaniel nailed two three-point shots. Finishing with one three-pointer apiece were Darling, Jackson Dudley, Vermillion and Wallace.

Oakwood built a 21-6 lead after one quarter and increased its margin to 43-12 at halftime.

Oakwood (23-70 returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at home against La Salettte.

On Friday (Feb. 2), the Comets took a 51-19 loss at Cissna Park.
